What is Holistic Counselling?
What Is Holistic Counselling? A Whole-Person Approach to Healing and Wellbeing

At Signs of Abundance, holistic counselling is more than just talking about your problems — it’s about understanding you as a complete person. This means exploring not only your emotions and thoughts but also your physical health, relationships, life challenges, values, and even your sense of purpose. Holistic counselling looks at how all these parts connect and impact your overall wellbeing, helping you find balance, clarity, and lasting emotional healing.
What Makes Holistic Counselling Different?
Traditional counselling often focuses on specific issues or symptoms, such as anxiety or depression. Holistic counselling takes a broader view. It recognises that your mental, emotional, physical, social, and even spiritual aspects are all intertwined. For example, stress at work might affect your sleep, which then impacts your mood and relationships. By understanding these connections, holistic counselling supports healing in a much deeper and lasting way.
Imagine you’re feeling anxious. A traditional approach might focus on managing the anxiety symptoms. Holistic counselling would explore what’s going on in your life that’s contributing to that anxiety — maybe relationship challenges, unhealthy lifestyle habits, or feeling disconnected from your purpose. You work together with your counsellor to create practical, tailored strategies that support your whole self.
Who Can Benefit from Holistic Counselling?
Holistic counselling is ideal for anyone wanting to improve their emotional and mental wellbeing or navigate life’s challenges with more resilience. This includes people dealing with:
Anxiety and stress
Grief, loss, and trauma
Life transitions and uncertainty
Low self-esteem and confidence issues
Bullying
Relationship difficulties
Feeling stuck or overwhelmed
It’s especially helpful if you want to understand yourself better, heal old wounds, and build a more balanced and fulfilling life.
How Does Holistic Counselling Work?
During sessions, you’ll be supported to explore what you’re experiencing at your own pace. The counsellor uses a variety of approaches tailored to you, such as person-centred therapy, cognitive-behavioural techniques (CBT), mindfulness, and sometimes elements from other therapies like Gestalt or narrative therapy. The focus is always on your strengths and values, empowering you to make meaningful change.
For example, if you’re struggling with grief, holistic counselling might involve exploring your feelings deeply, learning healthy ways to express and release emotions, setting goals for moving forward, and developing new self-care habits like mindfulness or creative journaling.
What to Expect in a Session?
Your first session starts with a free 30-minute consultation to understand your needs and goals. After that, sessions are usually 60 minutes long. In these sessions, you’ll feel heard and supported in a compassionate, non-judgmental space. Your counsellor will guide you gently to discover insights about yourself and develop practical tools for healing.
You don’t need to prepare anything or have all the answers before coming — it’s all about what feels right for you in the moment.

Here is a real life example of holistic counselling at play:
Real-Life Example
A client came to holistic counselling feeling overwhelmed by anxiety and disconnected from herself. Together, we explored how her stressful job, poor sleep habits, and unresolved grief were affecting her. Through counselling, she learned to set healthy boundaries at work, practice relaxation techniques, and gently process her grief. Over time, she found more balance, regained her confidence, and felt more in control of her life.
