I have often wondered what is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are closely connected, but they are not the same thing. The difference lies in how the hypnotic state is used and what the intention of the process is.

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and deep relaxation. It is similar to the feeling of becoming absorbed in a book, a movie, or your own thoughts, where external distractions fade into the background. In this state, the mind becomes quieter, more focused, and more open to suggestion and internal reflection.

Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, is the therapeutic application of hypnosis. It uses the hypnotic state as a framework for working on specific emotional, psychological, or behavioural concerns in a guided and purposeful way.

To put it simply, hypnosis is the state, while hypnotherapy is the structured process that uses that state for change and healing.

Hypnosis on its own can be used for relaxation, stress reduction, focus improvement, or general mental wellbeing. It may also be used in performance settings, mindfulness practices, or self-guided relaxation techniques.

Hypnotherapy goes further by applying that same focused state to specific goals such as reducing anxiety, changing habits, processing emotional experiences, or supporting long-term behavioural change. It is more targeted and therapeutic in nature, often combining hypnotic techniques with psychological understanding and change-based strategies.

Another key difference is intention. Hypnosis may be neutral or general in purpose, while hypnotherapy is always directed toward a defined outcome or area of improvement.

Importantly, both hypnosis and hypnotherapy are collaborative processes. The individual remains aware, in control, and able to choose their level of engagement at all times. There is no loss of awareness or control, and nothing can be imposed against a person’s will.

In summary, hypnosis is the state of mind, while hypnotherapy is the intentional use of that state to support emotional healing, behavioural change, and personal development.
