How Hypnotherapy Helps You Quit Smoking – Cairns & Online

Stop Smoking and How Hypnotherapy Helps you quit smoking in Cairns and Online

Quitting smoking is a big challenge for many people because it’s not just a physical habit — it’s deeply rooted in your subconscious mind. Smoking becomes a part of your daily routines, your way of managing stress, your emotional comfort, and even your sense of identity. This is why relying on willpower alone often isn’t enough to quit for good.

What Is Hypnotherapy and How Does It Work?

Hypnotherapy is a gentle, natural process that works with your subconscious mind — the part of your mind that controls habits and automatic behaviours — rather than just the conscious “thinking” mind. Your subconscious mind is like the control centre that holds your habits, beliefs, and feelings about yourself, including smoking. It’s actually thousands of times more powerful than willpower.

During a hypnotherapy session, you enter a deeply relaxed yet focused state of mind. You remain fully awake and aware, always in control, but your mind becomes more open to positive suggestions and new ways of thinking. This relaxed, focused state allows hypnotherapy to gently interrupt the automatic patterns and emotional triggers that keep you smoking.

Why Smoking Is More Than Just Nicotine

Many people don’t realise that smoking is often linked to:

  • Stress relief or managing anxiety

  • Social habits or routines

  • Emotional coping with boredom, sadness, or frustration

  • Deep subconscious beliefs or past experiences

Because these patterns live deep in your subconscious, they often continue even when you consciously want to quit. Hypnotherapy helps by addressing these deep-rooted triggers and rewiring your mind to support a smoke-free life.

What Happens During a Stop Smoking Hypnotherapy Session?

At Signs of Abundance Counselling, Hypnosis & Healing, your stop smoking hypnotherapy journey may include:

  • Exploring your personal smoking triggers and habits through counselling

  • Using hypnosis to access and shift subconscious patterns related to smoking

  • Positive suggestions such as:

    • Making cigarettes taste unpleasant or off-putting

    • Visualising yourself enjoying fresh, clean air with improved taste and smell

    • Strengthening your new identity as a proud non-smoker (“I am a non-smoker”)

  • Tools and strategies to manage cravings and stress without cigarettes

The program typically consists of two sessions, designed to create lasting change rather than a quick fix. You will learn skills and suggestions that continue to work for you even after the sessions end.

Examples of Hypnotherapy Suggestions

To help you understand, here are some types of positive changes hypnotherapy can encourage:

  • When you think about smoking, you might start to imagine the unpleasant taste or smell of cigarettes — making the idea less appealing.

  • You can picture breathing fresh, clean ocean air filling your lungs, healing your body and making you feel healthy and strong.

  • You may find yourself naturally repeating positive affirmations like, “I deserve to be smoke-free” or “I am free from smoking.”

This rewiring of your subconscious mind helps break old habits and build new, healthy ones.

Is Hypnotherapy a Quick Fix?

Hypnotherapy is not a magic switch that instantly makes cravings disappear. Instead, it works gradually by changing your subconscious patterns over time. Think of it like fixing a pothole in a road — every time you work on it, the road becomes smoother until driving without smoking feels natural.

Some people notice positive changes quickly; others find repeated sessions or listening to self-hypnosis recordings helpful to strengthen new habits.

Is Hypnotherapy Safe?

Yes. Hypnotherapy is a safe, natural, and non-invasive process when conducted by a qualified practitioner. You stay fully aware and in control at all times. You won’t do anything against your will or values.

Can I Combine Hypnotherapy with Other Support?

Absolutely. Combining hypnotherapy with counselling, nicotine replacement options like patches, or lifestyle changes can improve your chances of success. As a qualified counsellor with a Masters and Diploma in Holistic Counselling, I can support you with emotional and behavioural guidance alongside hypnotherapy.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

My stop smoking hypnotherapy program at Signs of Abundance Counselling, Hypnosis & Healing is designed as a two-session process (approximately 3 hours). This gives you time to experience the root cause of your smoking in the first session and have the clinical hypnotherapy session on the day you choose to quit smoking which is in the second (last) session of stop smoking hypnosis. If you want to explore counselling support as an add-on, that is available too.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and deep relaxation where the mind becomes more open to helpful suggestions and positive change. During hypnosis, a person is not asleep or unconscious. Instead, they are calm, aware, and focused, similar to the feeling of becoming absorbed in a movie, daydream, or book (Australian Society of Hypnosis [ASH], 2026).

Research shows that hypnosis can help people change unwanted habits, reduce stress, improve confidence, and manage symptoms such as anxiety, fear, pain, and emotional overwhelm (Elkins et al., 2015). Many people use hypnosis to support goals such as quitting smoking, losing weight, improving sleep, reducing sugar cravings, and overcoming fears or phobias.
