What Is Holistic Counselling?
Holistic counselling is a form of professional counselling that considers the whole person rather than looking at one concern, emotion or difficulty in isolation.
Our emotional wellbeing can be influenced by many interconnected areas of life, including our thoughts, beliefs, emotions, physical experiences, relationships, family background, past experiences, current circumstances, values, identity and sense of purpose.
A holistic approach recognises that these different aspects of life can influence one another.
For example, ongoing stress may affect your emotional wellbeing, physical health, relationships and ability to feel connected to yourself. Difficult past experiences may influence present-day beliefs, emotional responses and relationship patterns. Significant life changes may affect your confidence, identity and sense of direction.
Holistic counselling provides an opportunity to explore these connections and develop a deeper understanding of yourself and what may be influencing your wellbeing.
At Signs of Abundance, Tara combines professional counselling knowledge with an integrated, mindful, empathic and strengths-based approach. Sessions are guided by your individual needs, preferences and goals.
Holistic counselling is not about addressing every aspect of your life in every session. It is about understanding you as a whole person and considering the wider context of your experiences.
If you would like a more detailed explanation, you can read Tara's educational article here on:

The Whole-Person Approach: What Can Holistic Counselling Explore?
Depending on what is relevant to you, holistic counselling may explore several interconnected areas of your life.
Thoughts, beliefs and mindset
Understanding the thoughts, beliefs and patterns that influence how you see yourself, interpret situations and respond to life's challenges.
Emotional wellbeing
Exploring emotions, emotional responses, unresolved feelings and experiences that may be affecting how you feel today.
Physical wellbeing and the mind-body connection
Developing awareness of how stress, emotions and life experiences may be reflected in physical sensations, tension, energy levels and bodily responses.
Relationships and attachment
Exploring relationship experiences, attachment patterns, family dynamics, boundaries, communication and the way past relationships may influence present-day connections.
Past experiences and personal history
Considering how earlier experiences, family background and significant life events may influence present-day feelings, beliefs and behaviours.
Values, identity and self-esteem
Exploring what matters to you, how you see yourself, your personal values and the qualities that make you who you are.
Life transitions and challenges
Working through changes in relationships, family circumstances, employment, health, identity and other significant life experiences.
Meaning, purpose and spirituality
Where meaningful to you, counselling may also explore spirituality, personal beliefs, purpose and your connection with something greater than yourself.
Your personal beliefs and worldview are always respected. Spirituality is optional and is never imposed as part of counselling.
Tara's Integrated and Holistic Approach to Counselling
Tara J Clarke offers an integrated, holistic, mindfulness-informed, psychodynamic, empathic and strengths-based approach to counselling.
Rather than following one rigid therapeutic model, Tara draws upon different counselling approaches and techniques according to your individual circumstances, preferences and needs.
This allows the counselling process to be flexible and personalised, recognising that what is helpful for one person may not be appropriate for another.
Tara's approach combines professional counselling skills with an understanding of the connections between thoughts, emotions, experiences, relationships, physical responses and personal meaning.
What Can Holistic Counselling Help With?

Every person's circumstances are different. Counselling is guided by what you would like support with and what you hope to gain from the experience.
Holistic Counselling for Anxiety and Stress
Anxiety and stress can affect many areas of life, including thoughts, emotions, relationships, sleep, physical sensations and confidence.
A holistic approach may explore not only what is happening in the present but also the experiences, beliefs, relationship patterns and circumstances that may be contributing to how you feel.
Depending on your needs, counselling may draw upon mindfulness, CBT-informed techniques, psychodynamic exploration and strengths-based strategies.

Our early experiences and important relationships can influence how we connect with others, how we view ourselves and how we respond to emotional situations.
You may find yourself experiencing people-pleasing, fear of rejection, difficulties with boundaries, relationship anxiety or repeating patterns in your relationships.
A holistic and psychodynamic-informed approach can provide an opportunity to explore these patterns and develop greater awareness of your needs, emotions and relationship experiences.
Holistic Counselling for Grief and Loss
Grief is not limited to the death of someone we love. It can also follow relationship breakdowns, separation, pet loss, family changes, health changes and other significant life transitions.

Holistic Counselling or Traditional Professional Counselling: What Is the Difference?
Traditional professional counselling and holistic counselling are not necessarily opposing approaches. Professional counselling can already be highly individualised and may draw upon different therapeutic models and techniques.
The distinction is often in the emphasis placed on understanding the person and their experiences.
Holistic counselling places particular emphasis on considering the whole person and the wider context of their life, including emotional wellbeing, thoughts, physical experiences, relationships, values, identity and meaning.
It may also include spiritual or personal beliefs where these are important to the individual.
At Signs of Abundance, Tara offers professional and holistic counselling. The approach is guided by your preferences, needs and what you are seeking from counselling.
If you would like to explore this distinction further, read:
You can also visit the main Counselling Services page to learn more about Tara's professional counselling service.
What to Expect During Holistic Counselling
Every counselling experience is different because every person brings their own circumstances, experiences and goals.
Your sessions are guided by what you would like to explore and the support you are seeking.
Depending on your needs, counselling may involve:
-
Talking about what has brought you to counselling.
-
Exploring thoughts, feelings and emotional responses.
-
Developing awareness of familiar patterns and behaviours.
-
Reflecting on past experiences and relationships.
-
Exploring personal values, identity and self-esteem.
-
Recognising the relationship between emotional and physical experiences.
-
Developing mindfulness and self-awareness.
-
Identifying personal strengths and resources.
-
Exploring practical strategies and meaningful goals.
You do not need to prepare a detailed explanation of your life or know exactly what you want to work on before attending.
The initial induction provides an opportunity to meet Tara, discuss your needs and decide whether the service feels appropriate for you.
